South Yorkshire’s mayor has hit out against the possible closure of Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
Oliver Coppard says it’s “disappointing that Peel [the airport owners] do not seem willing to match our ambition for it, and have not been able to unlock the evident potential of an airport with a prospective customer base of millions.”
He says he was in talks with Peel to loan them £20 million to improve the Finningley site, and in talks with the government to make the terminal better connected.
Peel say Wizz Air abandoning the site, and the legacy of the pandemic, mean they’ve been forced to consider their options for the airport.
But if you’re due to fly soon, you should expect your flight to operate as normal.
On Thursday night at Doncaster Council's full council meeting, deputy mayor Glynn Jones called on the government to provide "a long term funding package to support the airport in the medium term."
