Message from South Yorkshire Police on World Cup

They're asking people to enjoy the Tournament sensibly, and know their limits.

The Fifa World Cup 2022 in Qatar kicked off yesterday (20 November) with Qatar and Ecuador playing the first match.

There will be an undoubted buzz of excitement across the country and South Yorkshire.

During the tournament, we will have officers working key dates across South Yorkshire to keep people safe and deal with anyone causing trouble as England hopefully progress through to the knockout stages.

Chief Inspector Kevin Bradley explains more: “We understand that England fans will be wanting to watch the matches and hopefully celebrate England’s success.

“We want everyone to have a great time while celebrating and we know the majority of football fans come together to enjoy the sport, and we are thankful for their actions. However, officers will not tolerate anyone intent on spoiling the atmosphere for others.”

To enjoy your time celebrating safely remember to plan ahead, book taxis, do not drink and drive.

Know your limits when drinking and remain vigilant against those looking to exploit you.

CI Bradley added: “It is important to remember that we all have a part to play in defeating terrorism and creating safer communities. If you see something that doesn’t feel right while you’re out and about please report it to gov.uk/ACT or in an emergency 999.

“We hope everyone enjoys the games and we come together as a country to celebrate safely.”
